Wednesday August 12

Today we talked about semiotics, a bit of memetics, cyberpunk fiction and film, science fiction genre, images of the future, evolution, Frankenstein, Metropolis, Anime: Lain, Gundam, Neo-Evangelion, etc.  

To do:  Read Blue Velvet film analysis (O'Shaunessy Media & Society)
      Look on resources folder for Film Form: An Introduction
      Journal: Interesting things you might want to research for a paper

Optional:  What kind of giant group project...video, campaign, internet meme, ... could we    do as a class?
 
   Design a Gang Patch (for a nice gang)

  1. When I read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, I felt it wasn't a book about technology rather a comment on humanity. As I remember Shelley didn't delve too deeply into science, the construction of the monster has been left ambiguous. This story went into the human emotions, pysche and prejudices. Dr. Victor Frankenstein's monster may have physically been created with knowledge and science but his personality was shaped by cruelity and hatred. In the beginning Frankenstein's monster was innocent like a baby but his creator/father was abhorred and ashamed by his creations appearance. The hatred then worked around in a circle, as Victor and the people dished out contempt, the monster changed from being gentle and kind to horrid and barbaric and seeked to destory Victor just like Victor sought to destroy his creation. The only person who didn't judge the monster by his appearance, rather his dispositon was an old blind man. I found this book heart wrenching and extremely painful to read, several times I cried and wished that I could have helped this person created by the hands of man and science.
    From this book I conclude that technology is neutral; it can be used for good and bad depending on who wields it. Frankenstein's monster is a reflection of how inhumane and depraved humans are, not about evil science. The character I felt most contempt for was Victor as he tainted his unconventional son and the technology used to create him with animosity.
    It has been a while since I read this book so I'll read it again, however I don't really want to because as I said before it is very poignant and depressing. It makes me feel ashamed about mankind.

  2. Everything mankind creates, from language, to customs to technology will always remain neutral. The context and association of good and evil is fabricated by mankind through varying degrees of articulation, for example the way a word is said or the purpose given to the technology that has been created.

    "Weapons don't kill people. People kill people"

    This statement will always remain true because the weapon is only the medium in which to perform the killing. The fact stays the same and that the person using it is the one performing the action of killing.

    The problem with technology is, it erases our identity as human beings allowing the foreshadowing the fact that the destruction we have created is by our own hands and not at the hands of the technology.

    We are only furthering and complicating the ways to our own destruction. It will require a large catastrophe to remind mankind of this unfortunate truth; which will inspiree our "humanity" once again.

  5. Beautiful analysis Stefanie and grood post Yoda. I wish I had time to reply but I am actually painting! I have just been translating information about surveillance operations (primarily US but also worldwide), Carnivore, Project Mockingbird, etc. into binary code as the background for a painting.

    We all know that there have been numerous attempts at a real life invisibility cloak in the Muggle world, but here’s a new one: in the next issue of Entertainment Weekly, CBS will be publishing video ads within the printed magazine itself! Daily Prophet and/or moving portraits much? From the Financial Times:

    The cost of the full-motion video ad was not disclosed, but it will be far more expensive than traditional print ads, according to executives familiar with the technology, developed by a US company called Americhip.

    The willingness to spend on such a promotion highlights the radical means marketers are employing to reach consumers at a time when a growing number of people are using new technologies such as digital video recorders to avoid ads.

    “It’s part of the future—a way to engage consumers in new and surprising ways,” said George Schweitzer, president of CBS marketing group. “How do you sample a drink? You give them a taste.”

    Unfortunately, the ads will only be issues delivered to New York and Los Angeles resident
